To drive a minibus for hire & reward, a restricted PCV licence is now required. This is called PCV Category D1. However, the D1 category restricts you to driving a minibus with up to 16 seats, no more can be carried.

This type of licence is normally useful to companies or organisations that will only use minibuses for hire & reward purposes not requiring the full sized coach (Category D).

The Vehicle Minimum Test Standard dictates A Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV) with 9 - 16 passenger seats with a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) of at least four tonnes, of at least five metres in length and capable of 80 km/h (50 mph). Tachograph, ABS, seatbelts and examiner mirrors.

To gain a PCV Category D1 licence you will need to follow the below steps:

1. Arrange a medical examination with your doctor who will complete the form D4. For reduced costs, speak to us before arranging your medical examination appointment.
2. Complete the provisional application forms (D2) and send to DVLA and await for your new provisional licence.
3. Upon arrival of your new licence, contact the office and arrange a one hour driving assessment. (optional)
4. Purchase a Theory Book and study it well.
5. Take and Pass the theory test.
6. Train in a Category D1 Vehicle with a maximum of 16 seats and pass the practical examination.
7. Send off your pass certificate and licence and await for you full Category D1 licence to be returned.
