New Drivers course Information
As from September 2008 for PCV and September 2009 for LGV all new drivers wishing to use their licence for Hire and Reward will need to possess an additional qualification. The Drivers CPC.
This qualification will require new drivers to take additional modular tests in addition to their theory and practical driving tests. These modules can be taken at the same time as the normal driving test if required or can be taken as a separate qualification. This will enable new drivers to gain both the qualifications required at the same time.
Gaining your new licence is not dependant upon achieving the Drivers CPC qualification. However, you will not be able to drive professionaly without your Drivers CPC.
Alternatively it is possible to delay the CPC element for up to 3 years provided that the driver is enrolled onto an NVT (National Vocational Training) course of at least six months duration. At the end of this course the driver will still be required to take the same examinations to achieve his CPC.
On achieving the Drivers CPC initial qualification you will then have 5 years in which to attend a total of 35 hours of Drivers CPC Periodic Training, in order to renew the qualification.
It is the responsibility of both the driver and the operator to ensure that only correctly qualified persons drive vehicles on revenue earning duties. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in criminal proceedings being taken against both the driver and his/her employer.
Drivers CPC initial qualification
Module 2:
The Case study test is designed to test knowledge, comprehension and application during every day working life. A computer based test consisting of 50 questions taken from 7 different common scenarios based on a normal operation. Their are 4 different types of questions that may be asked Multiple Choice, Multi Response, Audio and Hot Spot.
The questions will all be relevant to the scenarios outlined and in all types of question the candidate will be required to choose the correct answers from a list.
Module 4:
The practical demonstration test is designed to test the ability of a driver to carry out operations other than driving that are legal requirements.
Such as the ability to:
- prepare for duty in a safe manner.
- ensure that the vehicle is fit for service.
- show that you can take measures to ensure that illegal immigrants or goods are not being carried.
- understand the safe use of working practices.
- stay aware of certain other aspects of driving practice that cover safety and compliance, and the use of loading and securing methods which must be used with different types of goods to be carried.
The test is practical in nature and you will be required to demonstrate the required skills to the examiner.
Periodic driver training – Driver CPC
This qualification will require renewing at 5 yearly intervals.
New drivers will be required to acquire this qualification at the same time as their vocational licence.
All current drivers will have received their Drivers CPC qualification by acquired rights and will be required to renew their qualification every 5 years by attending 35 hours of approved Driver CPC periodic training, by taking Driver CPC courses lasting a minimum of 7 hours.
The courses can be on any topic that can be mapped to the Driver CPC syllabus and have been approved by the Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training (JAUPT).
Only approved courses delivered by approved providers and trainers will be eligible for entry onto the drivers CPC training database.
It will be the driver’s responsibility to ensure his Drivers CPC training record is up to date and to be able to prove that he has attended the number of hours of approved Driver CPC courses for his qualification to be renewed and that he can prove that he holds his Driver CPC qualification to the appropriate authorities.
Failure to comply with these regulations may result in criminal proceedings for both the driver and his employer.
